They Just Don't Make Supermodels Like They Once Did

models

That is a photo from 1990 of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington & Cindy Crawford. I always loved the supermodels of that era. It's great to see so many of the models of the 1980's/1990's out there again in commercials and print ads.

They just don't make models like this anymore. These girls actually had bodies. Plus they had personalities of their own. So many of the models out there today seem like skinny mindless zombies.

I had a huge crush on so many of them. Did any of you have a favorite supermodel from back then? Mine was Christy Turlington. I plan to start posting more pictures of all of these supermodels and many more in the future.

Here are two George Michael videos that featured quite a few supermodels, such as the ones above and Tyra Banks.

I believe what happened was the Kate Moss effect. Everyone after that wanted child-like bodies. Calvin Klein still hasn't figured out that he needs to get a fit model with curves...I always adored Cindy Crawford, probably because she has brown hair like I do.

Ohhh I remeber the "Freedom" video. It rocked!! I would love to be a model but I love how you put it I'm not a "skinny mindless zombie" so I'd never make it. Maybe they'll bring back models like cindy crawford. I liked her, I thought she was cool.

I remember this photo - what I remember most was the contrast between this photo and the photographer himself, Peter Lindbergh, with the models. The models and he all posed for a photo but alas I can't find it on the net anywhere - he was disheveled and stubbly - striking with the models.

God, I just love all these supermodels! I wanted to be a runway model because of Cindy Crawford, my favourite from that time. I absolutely love them all though. And I agree, most of the models now are skinny mindless zombies.

Keith, that's a very thoughtful post. i enjoyed reading it very much! i can see classic beauties in that picture. my favorite remains cindy; she is stunningly gorgeous.

"So many of the models out there today seem like skinny mindless zombies." >> models nowadays are very thin and somehow alike, only some comes up really unique, like karlie kloss. i also wonder why...

I don't think I've ever seen that "Too Funky" video. That is a cool song though. I always liked "Freedom" a lot. Christy is my girl. I've loved her since I was a kid.

I'm with on this one, Keith. I dig the supermodels from the '90s as well for all the reasons you stated so eloquently. If I had to pick a fave I would say either Stephanie Seymour or Tyra Banks. Both were (are) pretty amazing!

Paulina Porizkova was the one for me. My parents used to run a newsagents in the 80s and every time a mag arrived with her on the cover, I'd wonder who the stunner was - this was pre- super models, when she was anonymous. It was only when I saw 'Her Alibi' (with Tom Selleck) I discovered her name..

I saw a documentary last year about most appealing facial structures, symmetry and perfection etc.. . A computer ran a programme that took all three factors and combined them to find the perfect face most likey to appeal to the opposite sex. The results were..

Female - Paulina Porizkova
Male - George Clooney

All true it was on the BBC

i seriously second that! back then, it was more about the supermodels than anything! the clothes were made to fit the model and now it's totally the other way around

The only models I hear about these days are Victoria's Secret supermodels and while they are beautiful, they are not nearly as cool as the ones from the early 90s, like Cindy Crawford. I feel like super models used to be really big celebrities but now...they aren't. It makes me sad to see Elle and Vogue covered with actresses rather than supermodels like it used to be. It takes away the glamour of fashion for me. I think it also took the spotlight off models. They're not really that big of a deal anymore...they're just there.

And they are all just as stunning as they were in the '90s.

And yeah I totally agree, the super models oftoday just dont have the same look as those glamourous 90's supermodel greats.
Awesome post :)

they certainly don't make em like they used to! You are so right about the bodies and the personalities. they were all very different. these days it seems very little have personalities of their own. (Or maybe they're just too hungry to be themselves?!?)
Back then my favorites were Helena Christensen and Christy Turlington. They were more reserved and totally gorgeous.

Thanks for the comment I totally agree.
And at the moment Vogue puts more celebrities on their covers than models anyway.
This year 10 out of the 12 American Vogue issues had a celebrity (including actresses, musicians etc and even the lovely Michelle Obama in March) on the front whereas in the past it was always models who graced the front cover.
