It's Time For Some Caged Heat

I'm a big fan of WIP (women in prison) movies. I've seen so many of them. One of my favorites is Caged Heat, which was the directorial debut of Jonathan Demme. The movie was made for Roger Corman's company. Demme made a film that was above the standard run of the mill movie in this genre. I like it a lot, plus the movie counts Rainbeaux Smith (I love her!) among one of its cast members. I hope you like this poster. Anybody here ever seen this film?

Haven't seen this for years - I must revisit

Hey Sid. Thanks for the comments. I hope you get a chance to see it. It came out in the mid-1970's. I believe 1974 if I remember correctly.

Hey Wolfmen. I hope you get a chance to catch this again soon.

Hello Keith. I've never seen any women in prison movies. I'm not sure if I would care for them or not. What's the fascination with this type of movie?

Hey Phoebe. Yeah, you probably wouldn't be into them. I think different people like them for different reasons.

Great poster for one of the better WIP (imho and I've sampled a hearty chunk of 'em) movies. Jonathan Demme often has a superb touch with his films and some such as Melvin & Howard, Something Wild and Silence of the Lambs remain favorites of mine.

From this to Silence of the Lambs just a few short years later. What a jump for Demme.

I haven't seen this one... although the inclusion of Barbara Steele is a good sign (although, she would be way past her prime by the time this movie was released).

I always thought Caged Heat had Linda Blair... there was some WIP movie with her in it that was just really, really awkward.

Last thing, I enjoy a good WIP flick when they're just campy sexy fun. I'm a bit turned off by the violent and mean spirited ones like Ilsa and others... and would have to go with Nancy Sinatra Fan and wonder what the fascination is with that sick stuff.

Hey Steve. Thanks for the comments. I need to watch it again myself.

Hey Molly. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Scott. Thanks for the comments. I totally agree with you. This is definitely one of the better WIP films. I've watched my share of them. Demme is a great filmmaker so his talent went into good use here.

Hey Gil. Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them. I remember when I first saw this film and saw that Demme had done it. It shocked me that someone like him had done a film like this.

Linda Blair did Chained Heat. That came out around 1983. I've never seen it. Caged Heat came out in 1974.

I understand what you mean. Some of these movies can be downright sick. While others are more or less sexy and campy fun. It all depends on the movie I guess. I generally judge them movie by movie.

Caged Heat was pretty good, but my favorite WIP film is 1986's The Naked Cage. It actually has a decent storyline and is well-shot, but rest assured the exploitation elements are all cranked to 11.

Trailer is on YouTube, but doesn't do it justice:

I picked up my copy on VHS via eBay a few years ago...pretty sure it's not on DVD yet. But if you have a VCR and can locate a copy, I highly recommend picking it up.

Hey FilmFather. Thanks for the comments. I've never seen The Naked Cage. I've got a VCR so I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a copy of it. It is cool to see a good WIP movie. You want a film that's done well, but at the same time keeps the WIP elements like they should be and not try to whitewash it. I'll check out that trailer. I had watched quite a few WIP movies lately, such as 99 Women and Barbed Wire Dolls. I'm always on the lookout for more.
