Pam Grier Is Jackie Brown

jbposter2

I've done several posts here about Pam Grier. I've always gotten positive feedback on them. Recently I've been talking to some of my friends about
Jackie Brown. I love that film. I know it gets mixed reaction from many fans of the films of Quentin Tarantino. I personally think it's an amazing film from start to finish. The acting, the music, etc. are all out of sight.

Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, was released in 1997. It starred Pam Grier as the title character. Jackie's a middle aged flight attendant working for a second rate airline. That's the only job she can get in the industry due to a prior criminal charge. She's been smuggling money into the country for a weapons dealer played by Samuel L. Jackson. Jackie gets caught by the ATF. They want her to work for them to bring him down. She decides to play both sides off each other and get the money for herself with the help of a bail bondsman played by Robert Forster. The film also co-stars Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda & Michael Keaton. I can't rave enough about this movie. It was great to see Pam Grier in a starring role again. She really shines here. If you haven't seen this film, you owe it to yourself to see one of my favorite films of the 1990's.

Here are two clips. The first one is the movie trailer itself. The other is the opening credits (which I really love) for the film. Enjoy!

I'm a fan of this one as well. It's way overdue for a re-watch. Thanx for the reminder.

Hey Rev. Thanks for the comments. Glad to see you're a fan of this film. I just watched it again myself this past weekend.

That has some of my favorite SLJ lines:

"That is a clear cut case of him or me, and you know, it damn sure ain't gonna be me."

And to paraphrase (partly to avoid a racial slur):

"I'll shoot him and ten guys who look like him before I let that happen."

Personally, I think that JACKIE BROWN is the best thing that Tarantino has ever done. He really took the time to develop the characters and the relationship between Robert Forrester and Pam Grier was so well done -- it developed over time and they had great chemistry together.

Hey Darius. Thanks for the comments. I love those lines. Sam had some really cool and funny lines in the movie. He really had me cracking up.

Hello Keith. My husband is a big fan of Quentin Tarantino. This is his favorite film by Tarantino. I can understand why. I really enjoyed this post of yours.

Hey J.D. Thanks for the comments. I agree with everything you said. I'm finding this film becoming more and more my favorite of Tarantino's work. It's such an amazingly done film from top to bottom. Pam and Robert were wonderful in this film together. QT took the time to put up this story between them. I really was rooting for them.

Yes this was a a great film I thought. I read a lot of negative stuff about it but thought it was good and have seen it a few times and will probably watch it again.

Hey Bill. Thanks for the comments. Glad to see you liked this film too. Yeah, this film does get its share of negative heat. I never understood that. I definitely hope you get a chance to watch it again soon.

I like the soundtyrack, but as Elmore Leonard movies go I'm a much bigger fan of Out of Sight.

Hey Scott. Thanks for the comments. I totally agree. I'd love to see her in more movies.

Hey Robert. Thanks for the comments. I've read both the book and seen the movie of Get Shorty. I loved them both. I've never read the book this one is based on though. I know they changed a bunch of stuff from what I hear. I'm not sure. I hope you enjoy it.

Hey Allison. Thanks for the comments. That's cool that you're also a Jackie Brown fan. Pam Grier is so amazing. I love that woman.

In the book for Jackie Brown, Jackie is a blond, so that changed for the movie.

Hey Robert. Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I guess that's one big change from the book to the movie. I've not read the book so it's hard for me to compare how much QT kept and how much was his stuff.

In the book, I don't think Louis was as stupid as in the movie. I never got through reading it, must have gotten distracted.

Weird side note, in the movie Out of Sight (also based on a Leonard novel), Michael Keaton plays Ray Nicolette again, briefly and is uncredited. I missed a lot of the movie, but it was pretty good, despite J-Lo being in it :-D

Hey Darius. Thanks for the comments. I need to read that book. I want to see how much alike and different the book and the movie are. I've read a few other Elmore Leonard books.

I watched "Out Of Sight," but I didn't realize that Michael Keaton was playing the same character. Wow! I learn something new every day. Thanks.

You are right, the opening credits are great. And that song has taken on new meaning now that I live across 110th Street (though it is not the same as back in the day when it was written). Great blog!
